Dequervain tendonitis is an inflammation of the tendon that passes over the top of your wrist to move the thumb and hand. It generally causes wrist pain on the thumb side that is worst with gripping, twisting, or lifting. This condition is common in new mothers, manual laborers, or anyone who is frequently lifting heavy objects.
There are six tunnels on top of the wrist that help guide the tendons that extend your fingers and hand. The tendons to the side of the thumb pass through the first compartment or tunnel and this is usually the site of irritation that causes Dequervain tendonitis.
FAQ
What are the signs and symptoms of Dequervain Tendonitis?
Pain is the primary symptom. This often occurs with certain hand motions such as pinching ad gripping. Often patients report pain when turning a key or opening a jar. In severe cases there is pain with any motion of the thumb or wrist. Some patients may report swelling or a cyst. There may also be some snapping or popping sensation due to inflammation around the tendons
How is Dequervain Tendonitis treated?
Treatment for this condition starts with activity modification, splinting, and physical therapy. Your surgeon may also recommend a steroid injection to the area of the tendon compartment to reduce inflammation and allow for smoother gliding of the tendon through the tunnel. A large majority of patients will improve with these treatments. If the pain persists, a surgery can be performed in which the tendon compartment is opened. Total recovery time for this surgery is about 6 weeks with a return to unrestricted use of the hand after about 2 weeks.
